What is Hospice?
Hospice is about embracing the hope to live as fully as possible, in comfort and dignity,even in the face of advanced illness. Hospice care focuses on quality of life, emotional support for the entire family, in-home management of medical needs, and advanced management of pain and symptoms.
Who qualifies for Hospice?
- Those diagnosed with a life-limiting condition with poor prognosis should the disease follow its natural course.
- Those with illnesses in which curative measures are no longer effective, appropriate or desired.
- Families and caregivers of these loved ones.
- It is not necessary to be home-bound to receive hospice care.
Persons with any advanced illnesses are eligible for hospice. Some common diagnosis include:
- ALS
- Alzheimer's
- Cancer
- Congestive Heart Failure
- End-Stage Dementia
- End-Stage Liver Disease
- End-Stage Renal Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Stroke
- Parkinson's Disease
- Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
In addition, those experiencing serious multi-symptom deterioration, frequent emergency room visits, and/or hospitalizations, or discontinuing aggressive treatment may also be eligible for hospice care.
When is it time for Hospice?
Generally, it is time for hospice when doctors are offering a poor prognosis. It is better to begin hospice care early rather than late. Many people are referred to late to fully benefit from all the services offered through hospice care.
How do I begin care with Yellow Rose Hospice?
Anyone can refer a patient to hospice; patients can even refer themselves. Eligibility for hospice services must be certified by the patient's attending physician and hospice medical director. How is Hospice paid for?
Medicare pays 100% of allowable charges, including charges for medication, durable medical equipment, medical supplies, respite care and inpatient care related to the hospice diagnosis.
