Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hospice?
Hospice is about embracing the hope to live as fully as possible, in comfort and dignity, even in the face of advanced illness. Hospice care focuses on quality of life, emotional support for the entire family, in-home management of medical needs, and advanced management of pain and symptoms.
Who qualifies for Hospice?
- Those diagnosed with a life-limiting condition with poor prognosis should the disease follow its natural course.
- Those with illnesses in which curative measures are no longer effective, appropriate or desired.
- Families and caregivers of these loved ones.
- It is not necessary to be home-bound to receive hospice care.
Persons with any advanced illnesses are eligible for hospice. Some common diagnosis include:
- ALS
- Alzheimer's
- Cancer
- Congestive Heart Failure
- End-Stage Dementia
- End-Stage Liver Disease
- End-Stage Renal Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Stroke
- Parkinson's Disease
- Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
In addition, those experiencing serious multi-symptom deterioration, frequent emergency room visits, and/or hospitalizations, or discontinuing aggressive treatment may also be eligible for hospice care.
When is it time for Hospice?
Generally, it is time for hospice when doctors are offering a poor prognosis. It is better to begin hospice care early rather than late. Many people are referred to late to fully benefit from all the services offered through hospice care.
